Creek Task Force /creek-task-force/ /creek-task-force/#respond Sun, 13 Aug 2017 14:30:53 +0000 /?p=1097 Read More ›]]> We returned to the Newtown Creek area to tackle the dirty dead-ends that line the waterfront. These areas currently act as safe havens for illegal dumping because of the lack of foot traffic and surrounding industrial land uses. Volunteers of all ages were up to the task of picking up this unusually heavy garbage! We were very thankful to the great team at the Newtown Creek Alliance for working with us and educating our group on the health and safety of Greenpoint’s amazing natural asset.

Activists unite over litter! /activists-unite-over-litter/ /activists-unite-over-litter/#respond Sun, 09 Jul 2017 14:39:20 +0000 /?p=1106 Read More ›]]> On July 8 we gathered again at Greenpoint Reformed Church to pick up garbage along Manhattan, Franklin and all of Northwest Greenpoint. Always a good host, the Church provided us with a great backyard and tables for eating lunch post-clean up. The best part about this event to us were the connections made between volunteers- local activists for environmental and social justice issues in our neighborhood begin brainstorming new projects to collaborate on while making the neighborhood a cleaner place to live.

We coaxed festival and park-goers to pick up litter in the Park by offering free Curb Your Litter tote bags– and the strategy worked! We’re looking forward to the rest of the season and tackling some of the tougher, dirtier areas in the coming months.

Clean Up Day 8: Recap /clean-up-day-8-recap/ /clean-up-day-8-recap/#respond Mon, 01 Aug 2016 20:23:47 +0000 /?p=1043 Read More ›]]> We held our last Clean Up Day event of 2016 on Saturday, July 30. Despite the heat and the fact that the majority of the neighborhood was on vacation, we had a turnout of nearly 30 volunteers to close out the year. Java Studios hosted our group and we were really grateful for their support.

Northeast Greenpoint is a very industrial area and home to many scrap metal businesses, auto shops and warehouses. Just like our 2015 clean up day in this area, we found a lot of illegal dumping of large contractor bags full of garbage, tires discarded on the side of the road, and improperly disposed household trash. While it is disappointing that these problems have persisted over the past year, it is good to know where these dumping hot spots are so we can report them to the NYC Department of Sanitation.

One positive observation we were happy to make was that the Newtown Creek Wastewater Treatment plant keeps their property impeccably clean!
